DISASTER RELIEF
Power Outages, Cold Weather Plague Sandy’s Victims

FAR ROCKAWAY, New York – It’s been over a week since Superstorm Sandy hit—and in the hard-hit community of Far Rockaway in Queens, NY, families still have no power, no heat, and no public transportation.
“Restlessness and frustration is setting in for these communities,” said Jody Gettys, OBI's U.S. director of disaster relief. “The people you see in the food lines are not just the chronic poor—they are the middle class. Every socioeconomic group was affected. No one group was spared. You really have to be here to understand how horrible the conditions are for the people.”
Within 15 minutes of CBN’s Operation Blessing International teams arriving in Rockaway to conduct a food distribution, more than 100 people were already forming a line—hungry, cold, and desperate for relief.
One of those persons was Patricia, a hardworking nurse, who came not only for help, but to bless others—despite having no power or heat. “I want to help,” she told OBI staff.
This week, OBI teams are planning to continue daily emergency relief distributions to aid families in the hardest-hit areas of New York.
Thanks to the support of OBI partners, so far teams have served thousands of victims with hot meals, bags of groceries, and relief supplies such as water and blankets.
