CHERITON, Va., July 28, 2014 – After a deadly tornado struck Virginia's Eastern Shore, Operation Blessing teams began assessing damage and helping storm victims.

The tornado struck a family campground where more than 1,300 people were staying, killing two, and left a trail of damage in the town of Cheriton. With downed trees, damaged roofs, devastated crops and debris scattered throughout the area, local residents received a helping hand as they started the cleanup process.

Operation Blessing teams immediately began tarping roofs to temporarily protect homes against the elements and helping families begin removing debris and trees from their homes and yards—families like Tammy's.

When the storm hit, Tammy was at home with her granddaughter, Kinley. As they waited out the storm, a large tree crashed through their roof. Thankfully, neither Tammy nor Kinley were injured. After the storm Kinley said, "Grandma, God and Jesus protected us!"

"When we met Tammy she was so sweet and one of those people who is always helping others," said Jody Gettys, OBI's vice president of U.S. disaster relief. "She told us that other people needed more help than her."

To help her begin the process of recovery, Operation Blessing helped cut the tree that had fallen on her roof, hauled away the wood and helped with general debris removal.

"Tammy and her entire family were so grateful for the help from Operation Blessing," Gettys said.
