CBN.com —Norfolk, VA - For many of the children here at P. B. Young Elementary, school is a place to learn and have fun. The school is located in a housing project in Norfolk, VA and as terry Meeuwseen learned, many of the students here don’t have a coat.
“The children walk to and from school, so it’s important in the wintertime especially, that they are warm enough to get here,” says Terry.
One morning principal Alana Balthazar saw the need first-hand. “It was freezing. We were standing at the front door and I caught a few of my staff members saying ‘where is your coat?’ And we were just in the office talking like, ‘our children need coats.’”
When CBN’s Orphan's Promise's heard about the problem, we decided to help.
“We called and said ‘how can we come alongside of you and help you with what you're doing?’ And so the kids were cold and the weather was turning and we said, ‘how about jackets, what if we did jackets, scarves and hats and mittens?’ And so that became our mission,” says Terry.
And this past December, it was “Mission Accomplished!” Orphan's Promise teamed up with United Way of South Hampton Roads and gave every student a brand new coat, and a few other things to keep them warm.
"I have never, ever heard of organizations doing it for the whole school not just for one or two children, not just for a kindergarten class but from Pre-K to 5th grade. It's awesome,” says one teacher at P.B. Young.
The families of P.B. Young Elementary are truly grateful. One parent remarked, “It's great that someone could help us out. Me being a single parent, it's remarkable."
“I love my new coat,” exclaimed one student.
“I hope that a seed was planted today for children that had a need when they realize when they grow up that others have needs that they'll in turn reciprocate the blessing,” says principal Balthazar.
Another student proclaimed, “I was thinking that when I get older I’ll give some coats to more people like CBN gave to the kids."
