CHURCH OF THE WEEK

The God Squad of New Covenant Outreach Ministries

By Gail Casteen and Shawn Brown
The 700 Club

CBN.comThis isn’t your typical youth meeting. New Covenant Outreach Ministries of Norfolk, Virginia, coordinates volunteers from ten area churches to bring Christ to young people in juvenile detention centers.

For over 20 years, Rich Newsome has led this ministry, called the “God Squad,” bringing hope to troubled kids.

“Many of them have been abused. They’ve been forgotten,” says Rich. “They’ve been hurt. So we just try to do something that’s more interactive and energetic to provoke and promote their interest into the things of God.”

Andrea Stephens leads the aftercare program.

“I just received a letter from one of the detainees today, and it felt so good to know that she was sharing her problems with me,” says Andrea. “I could write back and respond to her and let her know that God loves her. We just want to encourage them to stay on the right track.”

Since the God Squad began visiting the Norfolk juvenile detention facility, activities coordinator, Leo Washer has seen a decline in the number of times youths that return.

“A lot of them have, after they leave this facility, contacted the God Squad and continued to have contact with them,” says Leo. “It’s made an impact for them to not come back to this facility.”

Quamane says, “God Squad was just like a messenger from God to help me out. I was always good in school but [now] I stay focused in school. I actually work to my full potential.”

For bringing love and hope to youth in juvenile detention centers, we salute you, New Covenant Outreach Ministries, as America’s Church of the Week.
