Dave and Sandy Reynolds: A Spiritual Diet

By Jewel Graham
The 700 Club – "I was a disaster waiting to happen," Dave says. "I had high blood pressure. I had diabetes. I had depression. I couldn’t even walk a block without stopping. I was just a physical wreck. I was in trouble. There are no two ways about it. I weighed 381 pounds."

Dave and Sandy had gone on "fad" diets before. But they always gained the weight back and then some! That's when the couple decided they'd had enough.

Sandy recalls, "Sweets had mastered me. I felt like you didn’t pray to God about such things. I put my weight on, and I should take my weight off. That was my problem. I should be able to control that on my own, and that’s too minor to take to God. But we learned that’s not too minor. God cares about us -- everything about us."

Dave adds, "It's an addiction. It really is. It's not alcohol or tobacco or things like that. Every day when I get up, I have to get my mind set in the right direction. I pull strength for the Lord to do that, because I know if I don’t, I'll backslide."

Through accountability, regular exercise, and the realization that God gives us strength to overcome any challenge in our lives, the Reynolds have lost 190 pounds between the two of them.

"He looks like a totally different person," Sandy says of Dave.

"It is a constant everyday battle," Dave says, "but with the strength of the Lord, it’s a very doable battle and a very winnable battle."

Dave and Sandy attribute their success to God’s principals for a healthier spiritual and physical lifestyle.

"My body is a temple of God, and I bought into that. I know God didn’t want me to weigh 381 pounds," Dave says. "One of our favorite scriptures is Jeremiah 29:11, and in there it says [that] He has a hope and a plan for you. I will tell you that at 381 pounds I had no hope and no future, and God has given me that."

One hundred and forty pounds lighter and trusting God to bring off more, Dave recommends that we all "remember it's connecting to God. That’s what it's all about. I think that’s the key to your weight loss program: connecting to God and letting Him be a part of that."
