Hassan Usman: How 'The Jesus Film' Changed My Life

CBN.comLike most young men growing up in Nigeria, Hassan Usman’s life was filled with farming, chores, visits to the village mosque and prayer five times a day. But, in spite of his study of Islam, Hassan still had a wild side.

“My friends and I liked to walk the village at night playing pranks,” he says. “We smoked marijuana, drank alcohol and even pulled up crops from people’s farms. We were quite mischievous.”

Early one evening in the year 2000, Hassan and two of his friends were out to stir up a little trouble at a special meeting they had heard about.

“When we heard some Christians were coming to show a movie, we said to ourselves, ‘Let’s go have a look.’ We wanted to mess up the meeting.”

When they walked into the meeting, a missionary was showing a CBN music video program called “Muzika.” Hassan says that all thoughts of causing trouble left him. Instead, he found himself drawn to the on-screen testimony of a young man named Nehemiah.

“It touched me so much! Because Nehemiah had lived a very wild lifestyle but God turned him around. It showed me that God was powerful enough to change anyone no matter how far he’d strayed. That touched me."

After CBN’s “Muzika” program, the missionary showed The Jesus Film.

“I saw how He suffered just for me, came to this world just for my sake and gained victory over death by His resurrection,” Hassan says. “Islam had taught me that He was capable of some miracles, but after watching The Jesus Film, I realized that indeed He is the almighty God.”

After that night, doubts in his new faith crept in. He had to know the truth: was this Jesus truly God and not just a good man or only a prophet as he had been taught? Hassan found the missionary who had shown the CBN program and The Jesus Film.

He says, “He understood me and asked me to kneel down. He prayed with me, and I accepted Jesus as my Lord. I’d never known such peace all my life until that night after the prayer.”

Now that he is a Christian, Hassan knows that his life is in danger. His Muslim family has rejected him, but he continues to grow in faith. And CBN has helped him relocate and attend a new school.

“I’m in school right now,” Hassan says. “I’m so happy about how my life has turned around. I hope more souls come to him like I did.”

God is using something as simple as a music video program and a film to reveal Himself to the Muslim world.

“It’s good for CBN to keep showing these programs because Muslims are repenting and turning around just like I did,” he says. “I wish all the Muslims could watch these CBN programs so that God can touch their lives.”
